Insurance & Reinsurance
In insurance matters, BLP is a leader in the region. Members of our firm have been actively involved in the process that led to the approval of DR-CAFTA, which opened the Costa Rican insurance sector to competition.
As a result, BLP is the first stop for insurance companies seeking legal advice for operations in Central America. Our attorneys specialize in all of the regulatory aspects of the region’s market, including recent regulations on authorization and registration of new insurers, intermediaries (agents and brokers), providers of auxiliary services, and cross-border insurance service providers. Our lawyers also have experience in claims management, relations with intermediaries and reinsurance matters.
BLP attorneys have participated in the drafting of proposals that constitute the foundation for the DR-CAFTA implementation laws related to insurance, including the “Insurance Market Regulatory Act” (Ley Reguladora del Mercado de Seguros – Law No. 8653) in Costa Rica. For several years now, our firm has been an active participant in the activities organized by the Inter-American Federation of Insurance Companies (FIDES) and biannual conferences of insurers of Central America, Panama and the Caribbean, during which members of the firm have participated as guest speakers.
