On July 20, BLP partners Anneth Jiménez, Coordinator of the Pro Bono Commission of the Bar Association of Costa Rica, and Mauricio Salas participated as panelists at a workshop on “Pro Bono Legal Work on Human Rights in a Comparative Legal Context”, together with international representatives of HIAS; the Regional Legal Unit of the UN High Commission for Refugees; the Legal Support Network for Refugees of the Americas; Pro Bono Networks of Colombia, Chile, and Venezuela; and representatives of the Vance Center’s Pro Bono Network of the Americas.

The Firm’s participation was in recognition of our long dedication to and leadership in providing pro bono legal service. When the Pro Bono Work Declaration entered into force on January 1, 2008, BLP was the first firm in Central America to sign it. Furthermore, we are celebrating the tenth anniversary of the creation of the BLP Foundation which oversees the pro bono work performed by our lawyers, who donate, in accordance with our commitment to the Declaration, at least 20 hours of pro bono work per year.

During the past decade, more than 70 non-governmental organizations have been beneficiaries of our pro bono service in which we address issues such as entrepreneurship; sustainable development and the environment; the rights of children and adolescents; gender equity and equality; the social, labor and educational integration of people with disabilities; and education and health within the community.

At BLP, pro bono legal work is a manifestation of our social awareness and involvement. We consider the work of every legal professional as serving a fundamental function for democracy, aiding in the prevention of corruption and the strengthening of democratic institutions, and enabling access to justice for underrepresented sectors of the population.
